Any movie with a cast that includes Freddy Krueger, My Favorite Martian, Joannie Cunningham and Laura Palmer's mom can't be all bad. Seriously though, one of the better cut-rate ALIEN knock-offs, pretty lavish by Corman standards. Transferred my old VHS to DVD-R, but wouldn't mind a legit dvd. Think I saw FORBIDDEN WORLD once, years ago on cable, but don't remember much about it.

"Forbidden World" (which I believe was released under its alternate title of "Mutant") still hasn't received a definitive release (apparently sourced from an remastered full frame print) "Galaxy of Terror", however, received a gorgeous anamorphic widescreen release (a Region 2 Italian disc). Still, the special features genre fans would love (imagine a cast commentary featuring Sid Haig, Zalman Brown, Grace Zabriske, Erin Moran, and Robert Englund...!!!!) still elude us. Bryan

Nov 6 07 8:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Interestingly enough, I'm writing a piece of GALAXY OF TERROR for Fangoria. Sid Haig says somebody contacted him about a possible DVD commentary awhile back, but he doesn't know who it was and he hasn't heard from them since. Roger Corman didn't know if it was on its way or not on DVD--somebody else chooses the films for the Buena Vista releases. Parts of FORBIDDEN WORLD were shot on the GALAXY sets while the latter film was still in production.

Apr 14 08 10:50 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	FORBIDDEN WORLD always seemed like it was meticulously designed to be watched by a 14 year old on cable at 2am. You could pass it off to your mother that you were watching some gory tentacled alien nonsense while it was more an excuse for a boy running headlong into puberty to see well oiled female astronauts hanging around a depressing outpost in the nude. Gratuitous footage aside, i always liked the storm trooper ripoff android and the inspired bit of feeding cancerous organs to the alien as the show stopping,vomit choked finale. GALAXY OF TERROR i always liked better, mostly because it had a better cast and went the extra mile in not being just an ALIEN clone and loaded itself with all sorts of absurd setpieces (yes..the maggot) that seriously played out like someone bought an issue of EERIE and stole the best scene from every story, regardless of whether or not they fit into a sci fi framework. A double feature of these two gems with commentary tracks is long long overdue.

I love these two films.Saw them both in the theaters, dragging my poor, suffering, best friend, who saw some of the goriest,hairiest movies in his life with me until he finally declared that it was just "too dangerous' to go to the movies with me anymore . When seeing FORBIDDEN WORLD, us two Trekkers were blown away, seeing the teaser for STAR TREK II. But I loved the movie. It's a wonderful, exploitation monster movie and gives you everything you'd expect from something like this. Hot,naked babes, lots of gory monster action, and great special effects, especially given the budget. Classic, imho. GALAXY OF TERROR was, and still is, great. I've always seen it as less of an ALIEN ripoff, as it has a more cerebral storyline, what with playing on it's characters minds and their fears. I really don't see much speculative Sci-Fi these days, most of it being lifeless "Action" pictures with a Sci-Fi setting as window dressing. And yes, it really does play out like an issue of EERIE. I love that sort of thing, so much. I believe GOT suffered some minor cuts for an R , while MUTANT/FW suffered not only gore removal, but also lost quite a few minutes of character development and some comedy, according to director Allan Holzman. It would be wonderful to see both of these, uncut and with a commentary. They're definitely two of my all time favourite Corman productions from that wonderful era. I always wondered what sort of behind the scenes strangeness went on during that maggot scene and now i know. It definitely made me want to drag out my old battered VHS copy and give it another watching. The DVD of this can't show up soon enough. Good article from start to finish.

I would highly recommend the Italian R2 DVD. It's widescreen and the film looks and sounds great. On the downside, it has forced subtitles, but I didn't find them that distracting. This was one of a set of films that Corman cranked out fast, taking advantage of some standing sets left over from "Android." I personally love the hallways made out of styrofoam "take out" food contianers hot glued to the walls, and the sheer exploitation approach to the storyline... sex scenes, sauna scenes, monsters gestating in the lab while one guy works alone... anime-style shower scenes, and the final resolution being to rip out someone's cancerous liver and feed it to the creature! If anyone wants my vote for the perfect drive in movie monster film... this one is it! Plus, it has my vote for one of the best posters, evah! A wonderful, almost Hildenbrant-style image of a girl chained to a rock while a huge scorpion mutant towers over her... Except they really should have put a legal disclaimer at the bottom of it: *film contains no scene even remotely like this in it.
