I guess I'm not asking what fanzine you consider the best - that is so difficult and subjective. But what one did you, for whatever personal reasons, just
enjoy the most. For me it was the earlier issues of GORE CREATURES from Gary Svehla. It was the first one I received when I discovered fanzines back in 1969.
The personal input, the wonderful letters and sometimes fan-wars (reminiscent of the flame wars we have seen in the past on the web), fanzine reviews and all
Gary's personal input on his life and why he loved these films so much. All that great fan artwork (when he discovered electro-stencils!). I thought,
"Man, I want to do one of these some day." And I did.... The highpoint was MIDNIGHT MARQUEE's 25th anniversary issue published by the late,
lamented Fantaco (what ever happened with them, and Tom Skulan?) where Gary went through each issue, what had been happening in his life and fandom during the
period each particular issue was published. It was really a history of that era when many of us geezers-to-be were discovering there were other similar
"monster kids", who wanted to read and/or publish their own zines (certainly FAMOUS MONSTERS had been a sort of testing ground, but it took fanzines
for us to really have our own input) floating around the country, pre-internet.
After that I discovered so many other wonderful titles - GARDEN GHOULS GAZETTE, PHOTON, L'INCROYABLE CINEMA, CINEFANTASTIQUE, BLACK ORACLE, etc. But GORE CREATURES, for good or bad, gave me this interest which refuses to fade away. Bad Gary...
