Oct 26 07 12:41 PM Burgomaster Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	That was a mask created by the Universal make-up department during the making of ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN. Perhaps it was an early stunt mask that was never used. I've seen behind the scenes photos of Chaney clowning with one of his son's who is wearing the mask. That photo even showed up in some of Chaney Jr's obituaries as Lon in THE BRAIN OF FRANKENSTEIN which was an early title for A&C MEET so that must have been written on the back of the original photo. Oct 27 07 1:24 AM Burgomaster Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It seems I also remember hearing it might have been created for Chaney to make personal appearances as the Wolf Man. It does seem odd that it doesn't look more like the traditional Universal Wolf Man, but this was shortly after Jack Pierce's departure. Maybe the new guys thought they were improving on the old design. Who knows?

I'm not enthralled with the subtly reworked Wolf Man look in the film as we have it either; Dracula and the Monster are spot on though. .'. Earl Roesel .'.

Oct 29 07 4:10 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yes; foamed appliances (I believe) with hair pieces with a lace base glued on over the prosthetics. (I don't know if they were punching hair into appliances in those days.) According the a recent Heritage Auction, it was also yak hair, which is what Pierce said was used, but I've heard the color was somewhat more reddish than the colors Pierce used, though if they used raw yak for those earlier films they may not have used the same dye colors anyway, as the Pierce Wolf Man make up evolved during those four films. It would be great to see a color photo from the 41 Wolf Man, but it seems that is never going to happen. You'd think SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE, had taken color shots back in those days ? Most seem to feel that the ACMFrank make up isn't near as cool as the Pierce work, myself included. It isn't horrible, but compared to the earlier films, it looks a little like a mask.

Sometime back Count Gamula posted a color pic of those appliances which he'd snagged off Ebay. Perhaps he'll post it again (hint hint ;) The funny thing is, you'd think that a foam appliance would be more expressive, as the original Pierce piece was hard vulcanized rubber, and yet..... yeah, it did look like a "mask" in A&C. Go figure. (Then again, Lon looked pretty good in that off-set dance floor candid w/ Glenn and the girls. Maybe the movie just bad lighting?)

The AACMF makeup looks like the whole face is one piece. Whether it is or not, the only part of his face that moved were his eyes. Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way. Nov 2 07 9:34 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Ted, a while back you posted a pic and suggested that ttwo two pictures are maybe left and right profile test shots of the same make up. I'm not so sure. The ears go off at a vastly different angle in each shot and the nose/forehead are different. In the original photo it's a pretty smooth line from the forehead to the nose, but in the second one (from the obit.) there's a bump between forehead and nose. The ears however, cinch the deal. Even without Peirce, the Uni makeup guys were good enough to make two ears at the sides of a guy's head look the same. At least, you'd think they'd be good enough. In the Pierce Wolfman makeup, he had a smaller snout that projected a ways out from the face. In A&CMF, he's got a bigger, beefier schnoz on him; that and he looks a bit darker than the Pierce Wolfman, too. I agree about liking the earlier, Pierce Wolfman better than the A&CMF one.
