This is my favorite part of the interview (I myself used to always prefer watching movies at the theater, but now I have an 8' wide screen in my house and
perfect viewing conditions/sound.) :
DVD Talk: Will there be any walk-in video rental shops five years from now? Lucas: Maybe, but probably no rental shops that would interest you or me. But it's getting harder to find even a movie theater showing something that interests me. DVD Talk: Why do you think that is? Lucas: In a word, remakes. I've always gone to the movies to derive new experience, so now I hardly go more than a couple times per year. I can wait for almost everything to come to home video, where I know the projection will be superior, the company will be nicer, and the floors won't be sticky. |

I've only ever seen one Bava film in my life. That would be Planet Of The Vampires, and I love it.
That being said, just by reading Tim's interview and following some of these Tim/Bava threads, I can totally get a sense of the magnitude of Tim's achievement. I'm also REALLY interested in seeing some more Bava films now! |

Agreed. Stuart did a hell of interview. Best one with Tim I've seen so far.
Man, I'm SO kicking myself for not ordering the book back when it was cheaper... Like Rak, I too have only seen a few Bava films...I remember not being too impressed with BARON BLOOD or LISA AND THE DEVIL (need to see them again to re-evaluate), but liking BLACK SABBATH quite a bit. PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES is in the queue to be watched soon.

Tim always gives very thoughtful, intelligent answers. Would that more interviewees did!

I too have only seen a few Bava films...I remember not being too impressed with BARON BLOOD or LISA AND THE DEVILThe Seventies output is not Bava at his best, but there was still a visual flair to the films. BLACK SABBATH and BLACK SUNDAY are incredible, as is PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES and KILL BABY KILL (even if the titles are not as poetic as those attached to some of his other work). I'd also urge you to check out DANGER DIABOLIK and HERCULES IN THE HAUNTED WORLD. Even films Bava completed for other directors, I VAMPIRI and CALTIKI, are worth tracking down. |

D'oh! How could I have forgotten DANGER: DIABOLIK! I have seen that film and LOVED it! Fantastic visual style on a budget. And Ennio
Morricone's soundtrack is unforgettable.
And I now remember that I have also seen KILL BABY KILL many years ago and was sort of meh on it at the time (though I did see it on video, so not the best visual representation). It did look good, a common thread of Bava films, obviously. Hmm, guess I've seen more Bava than I thought I had. The only reason I sought those few films out was because of Tim Lucas' championing them in Video Watchdog. Tim obviously has looked deeply into these films and seen much to value...which makes me want to take another look at them. |
