May 11 06 6:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This is the first film based on the Loch Ness monster phenomena not to mention that it was released when the infamous Surgeon's Photo came out. I remember seeing clips from this film on the History channel. Anyway, I'm just wondering if the film is in the public domain and could be downloaded off the internet or would I have to buy the VHS from amazon.com?

(A young fellow named David Lean was film cutter on this, by the way.) SECRET OF THE LOCH was available from Hollywood Select/Timeless Video for around $9.99 on VHS. It hasn't aged as well as other films of that era, but I still like it.

I was discussing how dinosaurs and man did co-exist with a friend the other day. One topic, in particular, was the plesiosaur. Here are a few of the more famous shots--- But science is always falsifying itself. After all, if you knew half of everything, then the rest is ignorance.

May 12 06 10:51 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The first of those photos is of a basking shark. Like all sharks, they don't really have bones, just tough cartilage. When a basking shark decays, the skull (I think one of the few bones in a shark's body) and spinal column take longer to waste away than the rest. You get a shape like that seen in the photo. I was excited when I first saw that photo back in the 1950s, but within a week, it had been well established as a dead basking shark. Because they decay into skeletal-like remains that resemble a plesiosaur, dead basking sharks are often (temporarily) described as that prehistoric reptile. (Which, to my surprise, I learned wasn't a dinosaur, strictly speaking.) I've read about this kind of stuff my whole live, and certainly don't dismiss out of hand the possibility of weird and large sea animals not yet identified by science. I've read a dozen or so books on cryptozoology, including both of Bernard Heuvelman's key works in this area. But I don't believe prehistoric reptiles have survived. And that photo is of a basking shark. The other two photos appear to me to be the decaying remains of a beaked whale. SECRET OF THE LOCH is reasonably interesting--at least until you see Nessie, all too clearly a lizard.

May 12 06 11:35 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Aw, Bill, you spoiled the shocking SECRET OF THE LOCH's finale! I agree with you, Heuvelman's works are of interest. Are you familiar with the books by Roy P. Mackal? (One on Loch Ness, and one on cryptozoology called, I believe, "Hiddden Animals." The Ness book puts forth some interesting ideas about possible unidentified sea life.) I've seen that top photo dozens of times, but this is the first time I've ever seen it in color--thanks for sharing, SB! I was surprised to find that it dates back to the 1900s...I recall once magazine running it with a date of the late Sixties or early Seventies. May 12 06 11:59 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The Sanderson name doesn't ring a bell, offhand, but I'll be the first to admit my memory is not photographic. Dr. Roy P. Mackal is (was?) a chemist and biologist at the University of Chicago, serving as a director for the Loch Ness Investigation Bureau from 1965-75. Did a quick check, his books related to this thread are "The Monsters of Loch Ness," "Searching for Hidden Animals" (on cryptozoology) and "A Living Dinosaur? In Search of Mokele-Mbembe." I think he either is, or was, vice-president of the International Society of Cryptozoology. Prior to that, he'd made a name for himself in DNA research.

Sorry to say that I have a very skeptical opinion of him; he was all gung-ho about Mokole-mbembe (or however it was spelled), for which there was quite literally no evidence at all. Ivan T. Sanderson was Heuvelmans' inspiration, a biologist who caught animals for zoos, wrote books about them and frequently appeared on TV shows with unusual animals. He was almost as good a writer about animals as Gerald Durrell.

The second one (regarding our 1925 friend) I discovered while reading a fantastic book called WEIRD CALIFORNIA last night. That book also contained a wonderful picture of Tor Johnson's head about to be feasted on by Lugosi, Chaney and Carradine (BLACK SLEEP shot). If this group is serious, though, about the topic...I do recommend a few very compelling books: SECRETS OF THE ICA STONES by Dr. Dennis Swift; MYSTERY IN ACAMBARO by Charles H. Hapgood; A LIVING DINOSAUR? (describes Dr. Mackal's two expeditions into the Likouala region of the People's Republic of the Congo) by Dr. Roy P. Mackal.

May 15 06 4:54 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Charles Bennett told me that the idea for the movie was his, and that he actually went to Scotland and visited the various places where it was reportedly sighted, talked to monks who said they'd seen it, etc. I asked him if he believed there WAS a Loch Ness Monster and he said, "Oh, of course I do! I think too many people have seen it NOT to believe in it. ...I wouldn't say that I necessarily believed in it at the time I wrote that crappy picture about it, but I believe in it now!"
