But it's got enough fun stuff to make it an enjoyable piece of escapsim, especially for fans of Lugosi and the genre. Wanna talk long threads? How about bringing up SH! He was only in his 40s back in the early and mid-40s but usually played characters who were older than his real age. Guess he aged early and just stuck there. I'm also a fan of this movie. Compared to the junk Lugosi was doing at Monogram at the same time, this was like an A picture. It's really Bela's last good role at a major studio except for his Dracula reprise in ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN. He looks good and he give a good performance. And his scenes (and all the horror elelments) are filmed very well with interesting lighting and camera work. The comedy team may have been pretty lackluster, but even they had their moments. Last Christmas a graphics pro friend of mine gave me a DVD-R of ZOMBIES ON BROADWAY that you'd swear came off a store shelf. I loved it.

You think the East Side Kids were better? I agree that the Monograms were fun junk, but they were still grade Z junk as far as the quality of the movies goes. Even B products at RKO had much more polish and respectablilty. Yeah, I'd rather watch VOODOO MAN than ZOMBIES ON BRAODWAY, but I think the the latter film was a major step up career-wise for Bela.

Jul 12 06 9:56 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I can't argue with the assessment of Brown and Carney's talents, but ZOMBIES ON BROADWAY is entertaining and well-produced. The production values are way better than the Lugosi-East Side Kids movies, but I love those too.

Aug 18 06 4:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Taking a break from Turner Classic's Lugosi Day schedule before YOU'LL FIND OUT comes on. . . Well, I gotta say I sure enjoyed ZOMBIES ON BROADWAY more than GHOSTS ON THE LOOSE and SPOOKS RUN WILD. It was fun (and a total surprise to me) to see actors from I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE show up, and the blonde Carney and Brown pick up on the island was pretty. Lugosi was the best thing in all three (well, he and a young Ava Gardner in GHOSTS). Carney and Brown and the East Side gang all pretty much just made me grimace. THE GORILLA was the afternoon's clear winner for me. I enjoyed this quite a bit. It looked wonderful, you got Lugosi and Atwill, some creepy photography, and the Ritz Brothers...well, they prompted some laughs from me, I must admit. This was my first experience with them. Don't know if I'd like them as much if they weren't in a horror comedy, where all the mugging seemed at home. I wouldn't mind owning THE GORILLA!

My question to anyone out there......Did either of these films make money when they were released? Seems thats the bottom line for the creators of these formulated comedy/spook ventures.I could picture myself having a fun time viewing these in a crowded theater.

Sep 29 06 3:59 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Approached by SHELDON LEONARD, the film ZOMBIES ON BROADWAY was originally written with Bud & Lou in mind, and they rejected it. It was also hoped that this film was to be the team's first foray into the horror comedy genre long before A & C MEETS FRANKENSTEIN (also with Lugosi). So off to RKO Pictures, ZOMBIES ON BROADWAY was closer to BELA LUGOSI MEETS A BROOKLYN GORILLA, in that the comedy duo of Brown and Carney were substitutes for Abbott and Costello the way Duke MItchell and Sammy Petrillo were subs for Martin and Lewis. Even the dialog was Bud and Lou-ish.

Sep 30 06 1:20 PM Burgomaster Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Abbott and Costello had a three picture deal with MGM in the mid-'40s. Maybe this was written as a possibility for them to do, there. If this is true, it's interesting to think that MGM might have been the first to put A&C into a horror setting (not counting the perifrial spookiness of HOLD THAT GHOST) rather than their home studio which was so well known for its horror films.
