In fact, Gregg Toland was the cinematographer on both films. If I remember Kael's book correctly, she thought the makeup on the elderly Kane was reminiscent of Gogol's, as well as the cinematography. After all, they were both bald. It isn't every critic who has that kind of insight.

Oct 26 06 8:08 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I finally saw this on TCM this month - what a great little film! I'd heard so many things about it that I was prepared to be disappointed. But I wasn't in the least. As others have mentioned, this movie has a surprisingly modern feel to it. Lorre was remarkably creepy and pathetic and some of the scenes - with Gogol confessing his love to Yvonne - were very uncomfortable. Amazing performance. I don't usually expect this level of creepiness in films from the 30's - it was a pleasantly unpleasant surprise. One scene that I found particularly disturbing was after Gogol was firmly rejected by Yvonne (I think she calls him "distasteful" or some similar adjective). He is due to perform surgery on a young girl with a broken back. She is already anesthetized and they are waiting for him. He enters the operating room and begins the surgery, but is so profoundly upset by the rejection that he just walks away - abandoning the child to the care of his less experienced assistant. Whoa. That's pretty heavy. The sets were great too - surreal and off-kilter. And the lighting - the strange shadows cutting across the scenes. We monster kids often wade through piles of bad movies to find a rare gem here and there. This is definitely one of those gems. Oct 26 06 9:07 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	That was exactly my reaction to MAD LOVE seeing it for the first time as a teenager, at some revival house in NYC. I got to the revival house, saw THE DEVIL-DOLL first (DEVIL-DOLL was on NY TV all the time so yawn) and then came MAD LOVE, which knocked me over. Since I didn't know when or IF I'd ever see it again (this was pre-home video), I glumly sat through DEVIL-DOLL again to see MAD LOVE again. I'd have sat through DEVIL-DOLL again to see MAD LOVE a third time if I could have, but this was the last show. I still remember how jazzed I was, going home.

I have Martin (paleoguy) to thank for introducing me to this twisted little thriller some years back... just one of several influential Classic Horror experiences I have to thank him for.

It is interesting to read this now, now that the DVD set has been released and it does indeed include the X's. I'm half-way through the set and enjoyed Mad Love as well. I was pretty revolted at the sight of Gogol in his disguise. His teeth and gums were nasty and the whole apparatus (brace?) that he wore was just bizarre looking. The only thing I hated about the movie was the need to include a doofus reporter. I understand that the tone of the movie was dark and disturbing and the studio probably felt the need for a little comedy relief but wasn't the Maid enough? Good film though. I really need to see "M" now.

Although I have seen "Mad Love" in the past, through the magic of the new dvd, I just watched it for the first time in about 8 years, and I must say I have even HIGHER regard for it now. I have always appreciated Karl Fruend's stylish direction and camera set-ups, but what impressed me most was the versatility of Peter Lorre acting. Besides his bizarre appearence (bug-eyed and bald), was able to exude equal measures of perverse menace and pititful pathos with seeming ease, even outmatching the controlled hysteria of Colin Clive. Due to the fact that it was rarely screened from the time of its original release up until the early '70's, "Mad Love" (like "Doctor X") doesn't enjoy the pedigree or acclaim it deserves (like "Bride" or "The Black Cat" ) Bryan

Ah, but that was Ted Healey, progenitor of the Three Stooges (who, according to the commentary, died of alcohol and a blow to the head outside a bar at the age of 41). Incidently, have you noticed how cool Lorre's teeth looked in this film? They were snaggled and widely spaced (a fact much caricatured in Warner Bros. cartoons at the time). Apparently he made enough money to have them capped, because in movies made soon after he sports a very average-looking smile. But in "M", "Man Who Knew Too Much" and "Mad Love", he has the definititive Lorre choppers.
