Lorre is at his maddest in this bizarre story directed by Karl Freund. The current Heritage auction includes a rare Australian one-sheet that looks pretty cool. Jun 21 05 2:56 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	MAD LOVE is another one of the many films I grew up reading about but have only tracked down in the past 5 years or so. Fantabulous! Easily one of my favorites! And it's sick sick sick! Lorre is amazing, and the scene and get up he wears masuquerading as the dead convict with his head reattached..... @_@ Not sure why but the whole idea is profoundly disturbing! I'm also fascinated by the whole Grand Guignole -something (I can't spell it!) motiff, and the idea that Lorre is more or less a sad, sick horror fanboy lends it a surprisingly modern sensibility. Jun 21 05 3:09 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just wanted to chime in with my admiration for this film (hence my screen name). An absolute favorite of mine. Lorre shines as the obsessed "fanboy". I cannot imagine another actor, alive or dead that could have pulled off such an eccentric character. Of course, Freund hits all the right notes with the exception of Ed Brophy as Rollo. He seems out of place. I love how Freund re-uses the great line from "The Mummy" , "...e went for a little walk!" Check out Greg Mank's great chapter on this in "Hollywood Cauldron".

Jun 21 05 4:17 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've sounded out about MAD LOVE on these boards many times over the last few years, and usually there hasn't been much in way of replies and comments from other members. I'm glad to see that there are others who love this odd film as much as I do. Of course, like most of the rest of you, I grew up seeing stills from this one in FM--usually of Gogol in his grotesque disguise--but I didn't get to actually see the film until about ten years ago. I was surprised and thrilled that the picture held true to its reputation. MAD LOVE is, undoubtedly, in my top ten line up of all-time favorite horror films. Each time I watch it one thing continues to amaze me--that it is only about an hour long! Highly recommended. Martin

I read the Everson chapter on MAD LOVE over and over again for years, but didn't see the film until MGM released it to video around 1992. I agree with you that the film more than lived up to the hype.

Jun 21 05 5:02 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've only recently seen this film myself, and I can't remember the last time I was so thoroughly entertained by a movie. MAD LOVE is a glorious freakshow, one of the unsung 1930s masterpieces. A Special Edition DVD would be most welcome.

I suppose it is an observation for another thread but, it never ceases to amaze me, the crap that makes it to DVD while classics like "Mad Love" languish in the abyss! I gather that "Mad Love" was something of an embarassment to the studio in its day and failed to resonate with the public....

The way they're going, it's not unlikely that they may issue this film along with other early MGM's like THE MASK OF FU MANCHU and MARK OF THE VAMPIRE. ------------------------------------ "It's MORE ... than a hobby!"

Jun 23 05 12:40 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I like this one and watched it recently but was surprised that I didn't remember how dreadfully slow the first 30 minutes are. I struggled to stay awake during the early proceedings when Lorre looks like he's bored to tears and speaks in a lifeless monotone. What really impresses me about the film is the gorgeous look achieved by Karl Freund and company. It looks like a Universal film. Michael "If you want something badly enough, you make arrangements. One thing bugged me, though. Why, if Stephen was on the same train as Rollo, was Rollo not in the crash? Or are we to assume that he was, but wasn't injured? Also, a quickie survey: If you had to spend an hour at dinner with one of them, would you rather do it with the innkeeper's wife in "The Invisible Man," or the housekeeper in "Mad Love?" Rollo was indeed in the train wreck. But he was not injured. Just as Yvonne and the others are arriving, we see Rollo being led away, still in handcuffs, from the wreck by his police escorts. Feb 19 06 1:21 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Someone once suggested that this film had a big influence on CITIZEN KANE- Orson Welles did use some of the technical crew, which means he probably saw it. ( And the general twisted atmosphere seems right up his alley!) Like "M", Lorre does an amazing job of making an essentially repellent character seem sympathetic... he makes us UNDERSTAND them. Very few actors- then or now- could pull that off- and Lorre did this sort of thing on a regular basis! (On a weird side-note- I've always found that "fist through the window" bit in the opening credits to be amazingly modern...it's like a Punk Rock moment!)

Gogol really is one of Lorre's greatest performances, and the entire movie is really ahead of its time. I have to admit, while Rollo is jarring in tone compared to the rest of the movie's general feel of decadence, I've developed a love for his scenes in the past few years because he really did seem to step in from a completely different movie.
