That's about the size of it.

It's just a way to sell fans the same thing over and over again.

Why?

It's cheap.

AND

Because they know we (or a good percentage of us) will buy it.

Oh sure, they might add a few EXTRA extras (see the JAWS anniversary releases), but it's essentially just a way to sell a sure thing to the public WITHOUT having to spend any money to do it.

As far as the opinion of "Hey, I'm gonna buy it to support the genre and to insure that future releases see the light of day", well, they're just banking on you thinking that.

I'm in no way excluding myself. Heck, I bought the latest JAWS anniversary edition JUST for the new extras. Had to have 'em.

To sum up, it's a business. Companies just want to make a profit while at the same time spending the LEAST amount of money to do it.

This ties in with the whole "remake films and TV-show remake films" debate. Why do they do it? Because there's an established audience and they can BANK on a certain amount of ASSES IN SEATS (or DOLLARS in the BEST BUY CASH REGISTER).

I'm not trying to talk down to anyone here at all. These are just the facts.

You wanna buy the same thing twice, maybe three or four times (like I have done several times)?

Go for it!

Just realize (like I do) that we're all being manipulated and screwed and that there's never a "valid" or "artistic" reason for any of this.

There's only ONE reason : TO MAKE MONEY.

Agreed David, I LOVE seeing 'em on the shelves and I hope lot's of new fans buy 'em up.

What I'm saying is that, in addition to hopefully reaching a new audience, the companies are without a doubt depending on the established and loyal fan base (be it horror fans, wrestling fans, Jessica Simpson fans, Jaws fans, whatever it is they're re-packaging) to buy it again.

How do they accomplish this bit of magic? They lure us like hungry fish with the promise of a new EXTRA, be it a commentary, a bonus track, a dangling car air freshner, a photo booklet, etc...

How successful they are at luring us in is based on how appealing that extra (or extras) is/are to the fans.

Take me. I will buy the same movie I already have if there's a new featurette, commentary, interview, etc..., but not if it's just a new picture on the box (although I know completists that WILL buy it for a new picture on the box).

I'm in marketing meetings all the time where the phrase "The die-hard fans will all want it and have to have it" comes up on a regular basis.

Again, I don't want to sound like I think nobody else is aware of all this. It's really just common business sense.

And you're right, it's not ALL about "the fans". Lot's of others will hopefully get turned onto Franky and Drac with these cool DVDs.

Oh, and by the way, I never said I wasn't going to buy them...(;
