Just after the fact, I and a few fellow seventh graders decided that Lyndon Johnson had the most to gain, and was therefore probably behind it all. His electoral history doesn't exactly suggest he'd have been above doing such a thing. Wait another fifty years, and we may be proven correct.

Through the years, I'd become more and more persuaded that the "official" version may have been correct. However, after I'd read the Bonar Menninger book Mortal Error, I think that his theory has much to recommend it. This involves an errant shot fired accidentally by a Secret Service man proving fatal after Oswalt inflicted the throat wound. No conspiracy, just a tragic foul-up. (The first report from an agent in the field said "There's been an accident!") It seems to fit the facts, and the idea that a coverup would be required falls into place. The agent allegedly involved refuses to talk about it, let alone sue their pants off.
