I did remember hearing stories about Deputy Dawg being pre-empted, and children in tears and their mothers asking: "Are you crying because the president was shot?" And the kids saying: "No...they took Deputy Dawg (sob)off the TV!"

William Manchester's book Death Of A President goes into fascinatingly minute and morbid detail about Kennedy's funeral preparation, even the dilemma about whether or not to have an open casket wake at the White House, and how the embalmers from Gowler's Funeral Home in Washington worked feverishly on the body at Bethesda Naval Hospital after the "autopsy" in the event one would take place. It was Jackie's decision to keep it closed, although she did open the casket once out of the public's eye.

Morbidly fascinating stuff
