You might be on to something, count.  I was a man, fully-growed, when I saw and loved THE MONSTER SQUAD.  But when I showed it to my kids, thinking it would be right up their alley, they hated it.  Too silly for them and, though they didn't say so, probably too "childish."

Would it be fair to guess that, as an experienced and somewhat cynical adult (just by virtue of BEING an adult), you went into it with no real expectations of it being true to the originals and so enjoyed it for what it was? At 15, I know I had much higher hopes for faithfulness to the originals, and so was disappointed even more by parts that COULD have worked, but didn't. That might explain our different takes on it at the time. But I still can't overlook the more juvenile/raunchy elements...to this day they make me cringe. The Monster's relationship with the little girl is solid gold, though.

That doesn't explain why your kids don't like it now, but it explains why I didn't.
