You might be on to something, count.  I was a man, fully-growed, when I saw and loved THE MONSTER SQUAD.  But when I showed it to my kids, thinking it would be right up their alley, they hated it.  Too silly for them and, though they didn't say so, probably too "childish."

A cable miniseries might be the answer. That means you can appeal to the niche crowd and no one really gives a damn if it sinks or swims.

Well, sort of.  But even HBO or Showtime will cancel a series that isn't bringing in the viewers.  That series with Laura Dern, whatever it was called, being a recent example.
