Great suggestions here!
I like the idea of a cable series, not sure of the format though. True Blood and Vampire Diaries have kept the vampire genre alive (an oxymoron?)! What may be tricky is keeping the iconic images since they have been burned into the public conciousness as comedy, cartoons and commercials for the past 50 years. The Frankenstein Monster seems to me to be more identified with a Herman Munster type character than the sympathetic yet dangerous monster we love.
What about the found footage genre? I thought that "The Frankenstein Theory" had the right idea, but not the execution. If a studio can re-imagine Batman, Superman, Spiderman et al into viable franchises, why not a darker, grittier monster series? I thought the "Wolfman" reboot had all of the right ingredients even if it missed the mark (imho) by straying from the simpler storyline and injecting the ridiculous Papa werewolf.
Get a Christopher Nolan, David Fincher or Guillermo Del Toro involved and you will have visionary directors, who understand the genre (and the fan base) who can distill the past with present without sacrificing the integrity of the characters. Be willing to spend the time and money to build the franchise, and not succumb to the desire for a quick buck by playing to the lowest common denominator.
