Obviously not an Universal, but an example of a modern company being able to use an eighty year old film as a very recognizable icon - with absolutely no explanation necessary for today's audience:



I think the Universal-style monsters have actually become part of our culture's consciousness. As far as Halloween symbols go I'd say for today's young'ens the iconic Frankenstein Monster, Dracula, Wolf Man, Mummy, and the Bride of Frankenstein (and maybe some others) are as recognizable as Jack o' lanterns, black cats, and witches.
