I think an effective way would be one of those big summer blockbuster films which reintroduced the Monsters to the younger crowd, like the recent super hero movies did for Spider-Man, Superman, etc. A quality film made with some imagination, wit, and heart would revitalize our old friends as surely as a full moon or a bolt of helpful lightning.

I honestly don't think the Monsters are really too far from the public consciousness these days. You still see commercials and print ads referencing the Frankenstein Monster and his Bride, King Kong, the Gill Man, Dracula, etc. without the need to explain who the characters are to viewers.

Maybe they have been officially and permanently transmorphified from movie stars to commercial stars in the public's perception.

I think that's a pretty good observation. But what gets me is that the commercials use the classic versions (I suppose doing so is dictated by Universal's character style guide) while Universal often tries to reinvent their characters, straying from the classic interpretations everybody recognizes and loves.
