With my wife and friends involved in the academic field - namely on a college level - my description of this progressing story to them has been viewed with familiar resignation. We have unfortunately bred a generation and more of young people who believe there is nothing wrong with the idea of plagiarism. Understandable in a way - when you can get your music, your movies, your news and everything else readily in an instant, why not your articles, books and term papers as well?

My wife has actually heard students ask, "Why should I have to write something new when it's already out there? I found the information you wanted, that should be enough."

Never mind the fact that many complain about actually having to READ anything they represent. No one seems to even understand how to do research anymore, with students breaking into a sweat when they realize they may have to actually read a few articles of a book in order to be able to write about their topic. (My wife's latest example was a woman in her late twenties that was upset to be shown the article she had to read for a paper. "Where are the pictures?" she cried, going on to say that she didn't have time to read the article in order to get her report done in time.)

I'm not saying this is strictly the case here, but I was surprised how many people who have to deal with people Spiderbaby's age or younger who think it completely unsurprising that this happened.
