He's been a friend for many years; we have spent a fair amount of time together. He's also been a friend to the genre--dedicating his life to it, really--for decades. To me Tim's handling of this stems from a simple generosity of spirit. That, and a desire to assess situations based on his own personal and professional relationships with individuals. And though I may not agree with him I think I can understand where he's coming from and his reticence to join a dog-piling, whether or not it is justifiable. (And no, I have not communicated with Tim about this; this is simply my opinion.) Some years ago Tim bore the brunt of a malicious and persistent campaign by some individuals connected to the now-defunct Scarlet Street magazine who characterized every delay of his then-forthcoming Bava book--delays meant to publish the best book possible--as evidence of fraud. Fans of the genre trusted Tim Lucas then and I suspect they will continue to give Tim Lucas the benefit of the doubt even if they disagree with him in this case. I think a lifetime devoted to the genre and his readers have earned Tim a bank of credibilty and that right. And whether one disagrees with Tim or not he signs his name to everything he writes, whether it's on the printed page or on the internet, which makes things easy for people like me who want to tap into more credibility than "a journalist I respect."
