The Scream resonance I felt came from the attempt to provide something of a "new twist" or surprise at the end (not the actual end, but the...well, you know what I mean). When the creators resorted to the more traditional twist at the finale, they moved back into standard genre territory. Certainly, this film wasn't anywhere near the blatant self-referential attempts in the Scream series (of which I enjoyed 1 and 4, but not the others).

I hope you find some enjoyment in Safety Not Guaranteed. It's much lighter than the normal fare I watch and post about, but it's very well-written, quite clever, and nicely acted and produced.
