Seems to me a few Universal actresses, like Susanna Foster and Gloria Jean, said in interviews that they were held back, maybe because of some behind-the-scenes Deanna Durbin string-pulling. I'd like to think that's untrue.

We're now down to just a handful of surviving 1930s stars ... Mickey Rooney, Shirley Temple, Jane Withers, Olivia de Havilland, Joan Fontaine ...... undoubtedly a few more.

I don't know if I would call her a thirties "star" but Peggy Stewart is alive and still working, having started her career in 1937.
