I gave up after about 20 minutes into this ... didn't even get to see Lector. It seemed boring, one-note, and considerably dumbed down from the original Thomas Harris source material. It seemed like Will Graham was having
psychic flashes o
f the killings, not the careful intuitive deduction the character did in RED DRAGON/MANHUNTER. (by the way, the easy reference to Asperger's is getting really tiresome ... half the characters on TV, from Sheldon on BIG BANG THEORY and Abed on COMMUNITY could be described as having it. Asperger's isn't even listed in the DSM anymore since some reclassification took place.)
I don't agree that shows like THE FOLLOWING or HANNIBAL are spawned by AMERICAN HORROR STORY. It's true AHS may have opened the door to ramping up the horror quotient ... but AHS is a cable show and doesn't show in prime time. It's also much more intelligent and better written and unpredictable than these newer shows. THE FOLLOWING and HANNIBAL descend from our fond memories of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, but are greatly dumbed down because, frankly, writing a story like RED DRAGON or SILENCE takes considerable intelligence and research. Serial killers have had a foothold in prime time for years now in shows like CRIMINAL MINDS, popping up with unbelievable regularity, as if there were a new Ted Bundy in the headlines every week.
