I could be wrong but, I get the feeling that with DRACULA they weren't really striving for much more than just getting the stage play on film.  It is a bit more cinematic than watching the performance on stage but, not very much. I don't think they were really aiming to enlarge the characterizations beyond the theatrical script ( which is really too bad ).
