it's not about real technology, it's about the "core" Trek technology and characters. Sure, they could have explained (but didnt bother) how the Romulan attack changed attitudes (such as Spock's father's feelings toward an unborn Spock) and the development of some technology...although I dont see how that would explain phaser-revolvers or shipbuilding on Earth - which were probably done just to be different from the other films and to look "cool."

But the one huge change they cant explain is Spock's behavior. Except for two very brief moments in the original series (when he sees Kirk alive in Amok Time, and feels the Vulcan crew die in Immunity Syndrome), he's only acted emotionally when he was compromised by aliens, drugs, etc. Here he's just a dude having a very bad day and starts hangin' with his chick. Sorry, that's not Spock.
