maybe it was all the youths involved, but at times it came across like a "Friends" episode.
To illustrate some of the dumbing down relative to the series (which include other people's observations, not just mine):

A 23rd Century Starship has a handbrake, and an engine room that looks like a brewery (as that's where it was filmed).
It's constructed on Earth instead of in space which just doesnt make sense. Phasers that have a chamber to reload like revolvers just for effect.
Paying homage to the Kirk-pilot episode by putting Scotty on "Delta Vega" which was originally
located on the edge of the galaxy, but now is nearby to Earth.
Jettison the warp drive to stave off the black hole at the end would leave them without the engines (duh!) so they would have been sucked in.
The odd plot points - the Nero and crew waited 20 years for Spock to grow up so they could get revenge? What were they doing?
The Romuluns know this catastrophe could happen, but they wait to build a special ship that looks like an egg beater only send one man to fix it instead of several ships asap. Wouldnt they be evacuating the planet in the meantime?
Did they really need to put a black hole in the center of a planet instead of just leaving it nearby and taking off?
Spock's dad is a nice guy and likes Spock. His acrimony against Spock from birth was just as important as Spock's Mom.
Spock going to pieces and making out with Uhura.

That said, the movie is still very entertaining, an effective combination of specials effects with visual style, and the beginning scene is great - I wish we got more of that first captain who Nero kills. I even dont mind the white interior although in "reality" it would be impossible to keep clean so perhaps not very practical. It's just that by diluting the source from taking too many liberties, it became less TREK and more something else.
