if you're a fan of the director rather than of whatever series he's re-imagining or whatever, then you obviously dont have the same concerns.

I never said the latter NextGen TREK films were good - I only liked the first two - but they were fairly consistent with the series in terms of character and science. Abrams screwed up alot of the Trek technology and characters, as well as leaving some major plot holes. Alot of it could have been easily fixed in the dialog (ie, explode a photon torpedo - not the engines - to get away from the black hole at the end). The plot holes would require more work.
