Just an objective outsider tossing his two cents in the ring:  When I saw the expression "comic book hero" in the title, I immediately thought of a hero who came from a comic rather than one who would eventually find his way into comics.  (For example, the Three Musketeers have turned up in comic books but I wouldn't think of them as comic book heroes ala Superman or Batman, if that makes any sense.)  Not trying to fan any flames here, just sharing my own "mental reflex" at the expression "comic book hero."
An obvious reason for this has to do with adaptations of indigenous comic book heroes carrying not only such tacky aspects from the source as the spandex look, boy sidekicks in pixie shoes and shaved legs, etc. but other references to the native medium, such as superimposed sound effects, having animated openings, etc. So properties which do not start in comic books usually do not feature such aspects. Also, many indigenous comic book properties have had a somewhat constant presence in animation since the 1960's. (Of course, many of the non-indigenous properties such as the Shadow have yet to receive their own animated series.)

I wanted to restrict the list to properties that started in comic books, as I intend to submit it to the IMDB, which seems to use the narrow definition.
