'Dracula is Dead...' made me think of some great Christopher Lee quotes in Scott Nance's book 'Bloodsuckers - Vampires at the Movies'. Turns out Nance came up with his very own alternate titles for 'the Satanic Rites of Dracula'...'Dracula meets the Nazi's'!!!
Reproduced here from Nance's book:“Nothing demonstrates that [vampire films turning into cheap cash cows] more than 1973’s ‘Dracula is Dead…and Well and Living in London’. Hammer changed the title to ‘The Satanic Rites of Dracula’, although it should have been called ‘Dracula Meets the Nazis’. Before it was released, Lee said, ‘I think it’s fatuous. I can think of twenty adjectives – fatuous, pointless, absurd. It’s not a comedy. At least with me it’s not a comedy. But it’s a comic title. I think it’s playing down to people. I don’t think people like it. I don’t think people appreciate it either, because people who go to see a character like this go to see him seriously. And it’s getting further and further and further away from the original conception of the character, which I have always said is totally wrong.’ […] Lee himself summed it up best, saying, ‘I just hope that people, whenever they see me play this character … I hope they realize that I am struggling against insuperable odds on occasions to remain faithful to the author’s original character.’ ”
