Whew! I made it through it all, but my poor city, Slidell is in ruins. My house was spared, but the house across the street was crushed by an oak tree early on in the storm. For days we in Slidell were cut off from the world. For days there wasn't even news broadcasts about our area because no one could get word out. For days there was no government, no phones, and no power for weeks.
I am proud to relate that those in my community who rode it out stuck together, establishing an informal information network and clearing the streets so, when help finally did arrive, the rebuilding process could commence at a faster pace.
The side of Slidell closest to the lake is gone. A quarter mile from the old graveyards coffins are still, more than 20 days later, in the streets.
I thank all of you who expressed concern, and hope that none of you ever have to experience anything like this. May all of your Godzillas stay on the movie screen.
