Maybe this is the place to get some answers from the Bill Warrens and the Tom Weavers, (Steve Ryfle? Is he on this board?) et al:

Was there ever an "alternate ending" in which Godzilla won?

Here's what I know:

When I was at Universal, they decided to rerelease KKvG to capitalize on the Devlin/Emmerich "Godzilla". I was helping out the Home Video guys at the time on other projects and glommed my way into this one...I asked if they were going to make a new transfer, letterbox it and show the alternate ending...

First, they looked at me like I had three heads. "We're only going to sell 10,000 copies of this, max," they said. "It makes no economic sense to do anything other than just make new copies from the same material."

(A heartbreaking lesson in just how few of us are out there and why things get done so poorly from a studio perspective, but that's another story...)

However, these cats were intrigued at the possibility of an "alternate ending" and said that they'd change their minds if we dug something up...good PR boost. So, we went to the vaults and the guy in charge said that there was a "small extra reel" with the main print....

For a little while, I got really excited, but it turned out that it was just a trailer.

Later I heard that the other ending was just PR...

What's the real deal here?
