Actually Tony, there were such things as big apes in prehistoric times. Very big ones, in fact.

During the Pleistocene, around 400,000 years ago, the extinct giant ape Gigantopithecus blacki roamed the forests in parts of what is now China and Viet Nam. The animal is suspected to have been, at least, 10 feet tall and weighed as much as 1,200 pounds. Mind you, that these measurements are speculative, since it is with some uncertainty that one reconstructs such a massive creature from the relatively few jaw bones and teeth that have been discovered. In general, though, these relics are about twice the size of similar bits of anatomy found in the largest Mountain Gorillas.

True, Gigantopithecus wasn’t “Kong-size”, but it was not too far from being, at least, a twin to Mighty Joe Young.

Sculptor Kevin M. Andersen has a photo of his own life-size steel and bronze statue of Gigantopithecus on his website, if you wanna take a look. I’ll post a link below. It’s very cool.

Many modern cryptozoologists believe that descendants of Gigantopithecus may continue to live today, not only in the mysterious regions of Tibet, but also in the great wilderness of the Pacific North West, where they are sometimes encountered by startled human witnesses and are identified as the Yeti and Sasquatch.
