Just to follow-up on the mention of John Carter upthread; I have to wonder what the marketing supposedly did which produced the impression of this as a "comic book movie"? What did the film do? Did they have an animated opening? Did they have John Carter compare himself to Superman*? Did they have superimposed sound effects? Does the title "John Carter" suggests anything? Had they called it "Marsman" or something along that line, that would have sounded suggestive.

*which would have represented a large anachronism, of course, per the film's time period

Regarding my point that Ghost Rider (2007) and The Fantastic Four (2005) did in fact have theatrical sequels, it reminds me that in fact comic book based films have proven more robust than other adaptation trends. Other than the example I cited; other than Mission: Impossible, how many films based on 60's secret agent shows have produced sequels?
