Question - are those trademark "slow-thunder" sounds that precede Godzilla's appearances supposed to be his footsteps?
My answer to this would be: sorta'-kinda'. I think they're as much a dramaric device as they are supposed to be the literal sound of the big guy's foot-falls.

Is the destruction of the island supposed to be an actual typhoon (they say in the movie it wasn't a "normal" typhoon) or the attack of Gojira? Again, sorta'-kinda' both. I think they were trying to be mysterious, scary and dramatic before literal.

In short, I'm not sure the filmmaker's wanted the viewer to wonder too much about such things. Does that sound like a cop-out?
