I watched the new GOJIRA DVD yesterday. For a "brand new 35 mm transfer from the vaults of Toho" I was extremely disappointed with the amount of speckles and blemishes on the film.

The main problem I have with the CM DVD is not the print damage (although the scratches do get a bit excessive in a couple of scenes) or the ugly yellow subtitles, it's the total lack of detail in darker areas of the screen. For example, during the centerpiece of the film - Gojira's nighttime rampage through Tokyo - I can hardly see anything at all, even when turning the brightness control on my TV all the way up.

I suppose this murkiness might be due to the print used, but it looks to me like CM simply boosted the black level so much that they washed out all the detail in darker images.

So has anyone compared this new release to the BFI version? Is the murkiness a problem there as well?
