I watched GOJIRA yesterday with the commentary, and Ed Godziszewski said that a lot of the specks have been on the print from its very first release due to its being edited in a very dusty, dirty editing room. They said that vacuuming the room actually kicked up the dust and made things worse! Also, the film was shot on a stock with a soft emulsion, which made it easier to scratch and blemish. So it sounds like the only way to get a "pristine" print would be to digitally clean it up.
