This is not what I've heard. Not if the licensor provides an open matte transfer from a negative, ready to go.

Here's what a poster (ECC) reported on Latarnia:

BCI tried to turn a previous open matte transfer into widescreen anamorphic and they reported a loss in quality.

Interesting enough, it's the open matte Spanish horrors from BCI that have the most vibrant, "wow" colors, not the anamorphic, widescreen ones, though the latter ones are also impressive.
