Re-watched it this morning with the commentary by Frank Coleman. I liked what he had to say, interspersed biographical information about the director, the musical score by Carrion, several of the actors. He was only marginally funny -- more in awe of the cinematography and shot composition. If this is the same guy who did the _very_ funny-but-reverent commentary on The Brainiac, I'm pretty impressed. He was humble enough to defer to the expertise of David Wilt regarding the Mexi-horror sub-genre.

One interesting thing, in addition to the info provided by MonsterPal above, director Fernando Mendez was the makeup man for Dwain Esper on Maniac and (I think) Narcotic. Frank Coleman draws a tenuous connection between that experience and Mendez's surrealistic touches in Black Pit. Also, Coleman says that Mendez was responsible for the vegetation appearance and setting in the hacienda courtyard; as a sideline he worked as a landscape designer. Very good stuff, probably derived from David Wilt, but well-presented nevertheless. I like the film even more now.

According to the back of the DVD box, there's a biography of Fernando Mendez done by Wilt somewhere on this disk -- probably written rather than spoken.

Hey MonsterPal, part of the film's score is a classical piece that I can't quite place -- when Mapita Cortez plays the piano, and also in the background a couple of times. Do you know the name of that piece?
