Speculations about Baron Meinster aside, we mustn't forget the first bonafide gay screen vampire, Herbert von Krolock, played by Iain Quarrier in THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS. Interesting, given the BBFC examiner quote Bill cites, that the real thing was only six years away. Considering that Hammer was an obvious influence on this picture, it's possible that Polanski's concept of this character sprang from the example of Baron Meinster and the rumors about the actor who played him.

When the film (as DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES) was submitted to the BBFC in March of 1967, some cuts were required before it was passed for exhibition, but I don't know if any of these pertained to Herbert's character or his attempted seduction of Alfred (Roman Polanski).
