So how much did that DVD player set you back in 1997 Joe? What brand did you get and how long did it last?
It was a Toshiba, I think it may have been the only brand around at that launch. I can't recall the price at this time, though I remember the price I spent on my first VCR in 1982 (that was over $700). Something is making me think the DVD player may have been around $500. At any rate, I must say the player did last a very long time and I had it for many years.
My first was a second generation Toshiba. It was $500-something, weighed a ton, and you could fry an egg on it. I gave it away before too long because it wouldn't play DVD-Rs and wasn't progressive. Sadly, I think I've owned 8 DVD players, 3 Blu-ray players, 2 lasedisc players, 1 HD DVD player,  and a partridge in a pear tree.
