Back in the '60s, hearing that I was into horror and sic-fi movies, a guy wanted to talk about one of his favorites that he hadn't seen since he was a kid--WAR OF THE WORLDS. So I leaned back and launched into my George Pal--Gene Barry--Les Tremayne expert-mode. No, no, he insisted, not that one. The one from the '30s. Aaaannnd we were off. No, not the Orson Welles radio show. No, not THINGS TO COME. No, definitely not METROPOLIS. Not even the unmade DeMille version. I tried to calmly convince him that he was just mixing things up. He'd have none of it. He knew what he'd seen. Some expert I was.
I thought about dragging in some sort of print evidence, but decided it wasn't worth it. I did learn a valuable lesson, though, and it's come in handy many, many times. When some idiot swears to have seen Bela Lugosi in THE WIFE OF DRACULA (a guy did swear that), or when an old theatre-goer tells me how good Marlon Brando was in ON THE WATERFRONT back in the '50s
on Broadway
(two separate old farts told me that)....well, I just nod and duck out of the conversation at the first opportunity.
The Qur'an puts it very well, "Dispute not with the ignorant."
