I think that general film fans prefer Karloff for the more subtle approach he gave his roles, though i'm certainly not knocking Lugosi, who was capable of very good work. It's difficult to get cineastes into the more florid styles of Lugosi, Atwill, Carradine and Slaughter, which is a shame, because there's alot of fun to be found there.

I wish film history was taught better. I took film history in both high school and college and have to say that it was very weak. Genere filmmaking is always skipped over, but i'm sure we all know that by now! Can you believe we didn't even go over German expressionism in either class when discussing silent cinema? I had to be the one to mention Buster Keaton, since my teacher only taught Chaplin. Simply ridiculous.
