Agreed, Craig, the UPA feel of some of that just doesn't feel like a good fit for the source material.  Still, any obscure animation information coming to light always intrigues me.  (I can't believe I'd never heard of this before.)  I probably enjoyed the story-behind-the story more than the actual footage, but I'm glad to see it.

Ray Harryhausen had considered THE HOBBIT as a possible project for he and Charles Schneer (I think he said this was in the early Sixties); I've always been curious what approach they might have taken with the material.
