This is pure speculation but-- what if they changed the metal's name just to make it easier for an actor, or actors, to pronounce?

Like the STAR TREK tale about how a monster called a "Gumato" became a "Mugato" because DeForest Kelley kept blowing the pronunciation.

Alternately, maybe once the director heard the word "Carsonite" he thought it sounded stupid, and so rechistened it.

I like the sound of "Cargonite" myself; sounds like the "noble gas" argon.
