I also like the films that drop the accents.  If everybody in the film is (supposedly) German, then they should just all sound pretty much alike, no "Ve haff vays uff makink you talk" accents needed. 

But I agree with clayking that, if someone's natural accent is just too much something, then it becomes a distraction.  The viewer has to work too hard and allow too much to really accept Slim Summerville as a German, or, my personal un-favorite, Wayne Morris as a Frenchman in PATHS OF GLORY.  Of course, PATHS and ALL QUIET are incredibly great, powerful movies anyway, but those all-American voices are small minuses.
