Truthfully, I'm not thrilled about the idea of an American Space Battleship Yamato.

I saw SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO recently. (Yes, I bought a bootleg. I'll replace it when the movie gets an R1 disc, OK?) There were things about it I really liked, and other things about it that I didn't. The way that certain parts were faithful to the cartoon only raised expectations that made the deviations from the source material (especially the ending and the reduction of the aliens from major characters into mere plot devices) more annoying. I say let the Americans have a go at it. If a version more faithful to the cartoon is made with Hollywood's resources, it could actually end up being the better film. If, however, it strays even further from the animated series, it will be a waste of those resources.
I don't really care that much whether the Argo is built from the Yamato or the Arizona as long as it looks and operates like the spaceship in the cartoon. The focus of the story wasn't really about where the ship came from so much as where it was going. I also won't cry "blasphemy!" if they use the American character names (Captain Avatar, Wildstar, Venture, Nova, etc.) instead of the Japanese ones (which would be kind of dumb anyway if the actors aren't Japanese). In fact, I've already got ideas for the casting of such a project (based on physical resemblance to the characters only, mind you):

Sean Connery as Captain Avatar
Zac Ephron as Derek Wildstar
Ashley Tisdale as Nova
Kevin Jonas as Mark Venture
Mark Dacascos as Sandor
Matthew Fox as Alex Wildstar
Dolph Lundgren or Ralph Fiennes as Desslok
The Rock as General Lysis
