Wow, this one was already deeply buried 6 pages back in the thread, and almost no discussion.
I and my friends are old sitcks-in-the-mud who almost never watch newer films, but at our regular Sunday evening film get-together last night one of them brought this Blu ray as his son had recommended it.
We all really liked it!
Pretty much agree with Bill's take on this. We noticed the issue of what happens to Gyllenhall's character and the one he's "replaced", but however you answer it (or don't/can't), to me that's the charm of all time travel films (which I love as a subject, period).
When handled right, the theme can have very heart-felt, wistful qualities as well as exciting and complex ones. This film handled it right.
I found it really well written, acted, and directed. It avoided action movie clichés, and despite similarities to GROUNDHOG DAY or QUANTUM LEAP, I thought it very original overall. Much better to me than INCEPTION, which I found interesting but flawed and over-long, losing it's way at the end.
Duncan Jones is a really promising director. Bowie's kid inherited his dad's creativity.
I just don't understand why this wasn't a bigger hit, don't think it exactly bombed but it came and went pretty quick.
Even when I do find a new film I like, I usually seem to be in the minority.
