Yeah, we're lucky to have Island of Lost Souls, even though Wells didn't like it. Watching it again, I realized how well it captured the environment of the book and the seediness of some of the characters, even if it left out a lot of the social message. Like the first movie of The Time Machine. War of the Worlds was done faithfully once, in what looked like a fan production, which I feel some affection for; it's charmingly bungling, shows a real love for Wells, and does sketch out what a good production would be like. The Invisible Man was done well, of course; First Men in the Moon, okay...ish. But Food of the Gods has never been done properly, and The Sleeper Wakens not at all. In the Days of the Comet and Wells' later sf novels, I'm not sure anyone even reads any more.
