I don't know that Tarzan comics are still being published* in a significant way, but they certainly were at one time.

Would Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy or Jerry Lewis qualify as comic book heroes/characters because of their appearance in that medium?)

Sure, the Roy Rogers character in the comic is not the Roy Rogers in real life, he is a comic book character/hero based on the professional persona of a real life human being, (didn't I mention Andy Hardy comics previously?) but again, you'd have to talk to the people who actually read them to get a response. I'll bet that many people don't know any of these. I doesn't detract from who or what they were. Roy Rogers gets a mention in Die Hard, doesn't he? Still mainstream, culturally significant.

It took some thinking to come up with Penny Singleton's Blondie movies. Wiki lists about 26 Blondie movies (judging by the title,) I have no idea if the list is complete, but it certainly puts Jackman and Reeve in perspective, doesn't it? Just 'cause the Blondie movies don't pop to mind to our modern selves doesn't mean the character was not culturally important or a big source of revenue for her studio (if that is how you wish to look at things.)
What other comic book heroes have we not thought of?

*I think I mean in physical paper/ink books. I know for a fact that they are available digitally.
