You said Tarzan is widely recognized as a comic book hero, and I agree with that...
This is all I am saying.
...but he is not completely recognized as such by everyone.
But this board is not for everyone. Comic books are not for everyone. Books on the history of comics are not for everyone. Why would the opinion of someone ignorant in these matters count on whether the Tarzan comics are a significant part of Comics in general?

Sometimes I see 'Best of' lists of movies where the oldest movie is no older that the early 2000s and where all movies are in English. I don't doubt that some of the movies are good, but such a short sighted and insular view is worthless in my opinion. Let that kid watch 50 more years of movies, then we'll talk again.

And you could use many different criteria for establishing significance in a genre: influencing similar comics, inspiring spoofs and satires, overall sales, reprints, letters to the editor, syndication (how many and which newspapers carried them,) how many languages has it been translated to, etc.
All or any
of these are more valuable that the origin (whether novel or comic) of the concept for the comic itself, since no particular origin negates the existence of the comic itself.

Get enough of that data and you can establish how significant a particular comic title was or is in comparison to any other title.

Does Michelangelo cease to be an important figure in Renaissance art just because you can find someone who thinks that Michelangelo is merely one of the Ninja Turtles?

No.

That Michelangelo was an influential figure in Renaissance Italian art is a fact, not an opinion (or at the very least an educated and informed opinion based on solid data and facts such as I mentioned above.) You will find people ignorant of this fact, (and it is useless to discuss art with them...)

...But I am assuming that people on this board are interested enough in the genres we discuss to know basic history or facts about them. I'll betcha anything that Scat knows there are Tarzan comics... but for some subjective reason chooses to ignore them.
