Andy Hardy started as a play.

El Santo started as a wrestler's persona in the ring. One might as well count those western singers and cowboy film stars who played themselves (well, fictionalized versions of themselves) and had comic books based on them. In other words, I do not.

I would say that any character fictional or otherwise that is featured in a comic book named after him/her qualifies as a 'comic book hero.'

Just 'cause, literally, that is what that character is.

In El Santos case, the man was in over 50 films, the subject of several comic book series and played the character in a real life setting to the point that when he passed away,he was buried in his signature mask and his tomb bears his heroic name. Regardless of the "chicken or the egg" origin argument, his longevity was impressive and a modern actor playing a comic character 4 or 5 times pales in comparison. Never mind the fact that you could read his comic, watch one of his films and then go to an arena and watch him wrestle as the same character and meet him afterwards. If you met Hugh Jackman, you definitely aren't meeting Wolverine. Never before or since has the lines of comic book/reality blurred that strangely or nicely.
