Andy Hardy started as a play.

El Santo started as a wrestler's persona in the ring. One might as well count those western singers and cowboy film stars who played themselves (well, fictionalized versions of themselves) and had comic books based on them. In other words, I do not.

Joker was stolen from THE MAN WHO LAUGHS so I won't recognize him as a comic book character because he was a film character first. Cesar Romero wasn't playing a comic book character but an extension of a previous cinematic character. Is that how this works?
They established their property as sufficiently separate intellectual property from Gwynplaine, who debuted in Victor Hugo's Novel, byt he way.

Remember, 'Tec#27 cribbed The Shadow novel Partners of Peril. Much such lifting happened then.
